Introduction

This blog is mostly just a place I'm posting any notes I make while studying Rathlin Irish. My main reference is "The Irish Language on Rathlin Island", available at  archive.org . For a blog with more detailed discussion on Rathlin Irish, head to the Rathlin and Glens Irish blog . Obligatory disclaimer: I'm just a hobbyist, I've no academic background in any linguistics background and I am not a fluent irish speaker. I would say the current world expert on Rathlin Irish would be Ciaran Dunbar (Ciarán Ó Duibhín), who has published multiple books on East Ulster Gaelic and has collated research notes on his website .

Sa phostáil seo, féachaim próiseas figh crios ar an chos a thaisean, fríd Gaedhilg Reachraidh. Chan mise sean-chleaichte aig an figheadoireacht, nó aig an Gaedhilg, mar sin fáilte roimh ceartaidhean. Chan bhfeil anseo ach an méid atá ionnsaighte agam go dtí seo. 1. Snáthan a dheilbhiú Cur dhá caithir os comhar is 3 méadar ó chéile. Tóg ceirtlín snátha, agus ceangail ceann an snáth leis an chéad caithir, agus coisigh tiomall an dara chaithir, ar ais chúig an céad caithir. Sin snáth amháin dheilbhithe. Déan aríst é seo nó gon bíodh a h-uile snáth sa dath sin le dheibhiú déanta. Fág 10-15 cm fad an tsnátha breise, gearr é agus ceangal é leis an caithir.

A Rathlin Folktale

The most complete recording of spoken Rathlin Irish is of a tale recited by Domhnall Mac Mhuitcheartaigh, or Deniel McCurdy.  The tale is known as " The Story about the Bannock ". The audio of this recording is hosted at  Yudu Express : A transcript of the recording can be found on the Irish language blog Rámás Béaróide . Another version of the story can be found on page 152 of   The Irish language in Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim (Royal Irish Academy, 1942) .
